Burney Friends and Neighbors
Burney Friends and Neighbors (BFN) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in July of 2024 in response to the desire of the North Central California Presbytery (NCCP) to divest itself of the former Burney Presbyterian Church (BPC) to a local nonprofit to be repurposed for community benefit. The property has two buildings of approximately 2,000 sq ft. The first building is a sanctuary, built in the 1940s. An expansion in the 1970s added an open room and kitchen. The second building has office and classroom spaces. The property is centrally located in Burney on Hwy 299E at Marquette St, across from Safeway. Community members hold fond memories of the BPC and have expressed support to utilize the property as a community center.
Our goal is to turn this property into a meeting place for community members where people can come together to connect, be it socially or for emergency purposes during times of crisis. One object is to facilitate a space that can host art, music, and other cultural events. Additionally, our vision is to use the offices and classrooms as meeting places to host a teen center, a childcare co-op, senior activities, arts, and crafts workshops as well as a meeting space for other area nonprofits. Another objective is to turn this space into a resilience hub for education regarding potential emergencies as well as response and follow-up for actual emergencies including wildfires, extreme temperature events and other natural disasters.
